The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has distributed a total of $500,000 in grants to more than 70 universities, museums and career development programs for the 2010-11 year.

Internship programs to receive $10,000 in coin include those run by CalArts, Columbia U.’s School of the Arts, New York U.’s Kanbar Institute of Film & Television, UCLA’s Film and Television program and USC. NYU received $9,500 for its film preservation program, while Loyola Marymount received $7,500 for its internship program.

The Acad noted that its grants for the 2010-11 period went to a record 73 institutions.

“The Academy strives to make the motion picture industry as accessible as possible to new talent and the public,” said grants committee chair Andrew Marlowe.

Among other recipients, AFI’s directing workshop for women received $15,000 and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s film program received $12,500. Film Independent, UCLA Film and Television Archive’s screening series and the Writers Guild Foundation each were awarded $10,000.
