Spielberg to direct ‘Robopocalypse’

DreamWorks drama to begin shooting in Jan. '12

Steven Spielberg’s next directing project after “War Horse” will be a return to his tentpole roots: futuristic drama “Robopocalypse.”

He’s set to begin principal photography on the DreamWorks Studios pic in January 2012. Disney will distribute the film through its Touchstone label in 2013.

Based on the novel of the same name by Daniel H. Wilson, “Robopocalypse” explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising. Spielberg will direct from an adapted script by Drew Goddard.

” ‘Robopocalypse’ embodies an imaginative story of a robot rebel-lion unleashed against the human race,” said DreamWorks co-president of production Mark Sourian. “This is a project we immediately sparked to, and with Steven directing it, we knew it was in the best possible hands to bring it to worldwide audiences.”

Sourian announced the project with co-president of production Holly Bario. DreamWorks acquired feature rights to Wilson’s unpublished manuscript in November. Doubleday has publishing rights and will release the book in June.

Spielberg is in London shooting the bigscreen adaptation of WWI story “War Horse.” Disney and DreamWorks will release the film Dec. 28, 2011, one week after Universal and Sony release another Spielberg-directed project, “The Adventures of Tintin: Secrets of the Unicorn.”
