The specialty box office saw a clutch of promising openings this weekend, led by Apparition’s rock biopic “The Runaways,” which grossed an estimated $803,629 at 244 locations.
But despite starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, the pic hasn’t yet tapped into younger auds, and most filmgoers were in the 25 and older demo that remembers the band’s heyday.
Still, Apparition CEO Bob Berney said he hopes strong word-of-mouth driven by the film’s edgier aspects, along with the soundtrack, will entice broader demos when it expands on April 9.
Also entering the frame in limited release was Focus Features’ dramedy “Greenberg,” starring Ben Stiller. Directed by Noah Baumbach, pic scored the frame’s highest per-screen average with $40,144, after launching with an estimated $120,432 at three engagements in New York and L.A.
Micro distrib Music Box launched Swedish pic “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” with a wider-than-usual release of 34 locations, grossing $340,408. Based on the bestselling novel, pic grossed more than $100 million in Europe and is set for a U.S. remake.
