Paramount passes $1 bil overseas

Studio reaches mark week earlier than last year

Paramount Pictures Intl. has crossed the $1 billion mark at the international box office thanks to a robust weekend of $42.6 million from “Shrek Forever After.”

It’s the fourth consecutive year that PPI’s international biz has crossed that threshold, and it achieved it a week earlier than in 2009. Last week, Par became the first studio to cross the $1 billion mark at the domestic B.O. in 2010.

The final installment of the “Shrek” franchise bowed last weekend in the U.K. and Ireland to £8.9 million ($13.5 million). The pic took $5.2 million in Germany and $6.4 million in Korea for an international cume of $140 million.

Par/DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” is also a high-flying success around the world with a $262 million cume to date. Pic is skedded to open in Japan on Aug. 7.

“Iron Man 2” has taken more than $305 million globally, with more than $295 million coming from PPI territories.

Helmer Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” has cumed $50.3 million, of which $48.9 million was taken in 2010.

Jason Reitman’s “Up in the Air” took $81.1 million internationally this year, while Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” generated $167 million overseas, with $126.4 million coming from PPI released territories. Pic is Scorsese’s biggest international hit to date.

Par’s international lineup for the rest of 2010 includes M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender,” which launches Saturday in four markets, including Russia; Steve Carell starrer “Dinner for Schmucks”; “Jackass 3D” in October; “Paranormal Activity 2” on Oct. 22; and DreamWorks’ “Megamind” and Ben Stiller starrer “Little Fockers” for Christmas weekend.
