‘Inception’ is a dream at Friday B.O.

Surrealist thriller takes in an estimated $21.3 million

Christopher Nolan directs another film to the No. 1 spot.

The “Dark Knight” director’s newest pic, “Inception,” scared up an impressive opening day. The Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures film collected an estimated $21.3 million on Friday in 3,792 runs, which includes about $3 million from midnight shows.

Universal’s 3D animated “Despicable Me” came in at No. 2, earning about $10 million in 3,501 engagements. Disney’s new pic “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” collected an estimated $5.4 million in 3,504 runs, while Summit’s “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” grabbed the No. 4 spot, earning about $4.5 million in 4,001 engagements. Rounding out the top 5 was Disney’s 3D pic “Toy Story 3,” which earned about $3.45 million in 3,177 runs.

Sony’s “Grown Ups” comes in at No. 6 with an estimated $3.2 million in 3,074 engagements. Paramount’s 3D pic, “The Last Airbender” collected an estimate of $2.2 million in 2,805 runs, while Fox’s “Predators” chased it for the No. 8 spot with roughly $2.1 million in 2,669 engagements. The Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz pic, “Knight and Day,” grabbed the No. 9 spot with about $1 million in 1,925 runs. Sony’s “The Karate Kid” finished at No. 10 with an estimate of $650,000 in 1,532 engagements.
