‘Evil’ does good at Friday B.O.

Scarer pulls in an estimated $10.9 million

Moviegoers were feeling rather evil on Friday night.

“Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D,” the latest installment in the video-game-to-big-screen franchise, topped the box office on Friday. The Screen Gems/Sony pic pulled in an estimated $10.9 million in 3,203 engagements.

The No. 2 spot was a tossup. Screen Gems/Sony’s “Takers” collected about $1.775 million in 2,191 runs, while Focus Features’ “The American” earned about $1.7 million in 2,833 engagements.

Drew Barrymore’s romantic comedy “Going The Distance” earned the New Line/Warner Bros. pic about $1.3 million in 3,030 runs. Machete dropppeds from last Friday’s top opening to No. 5; the Fox film brought in about $1.3 million in 2,678 engagements.

Lionsgate’s horror pic “The Last Exorcism” came in with about $1 million in 2,731 runs, while Sony’s “The Other Guys” also grabbed about $1 million in 2,246 engagements.

Rounding out the bottom three were Lionsgate’s “The Expendables” (about $950,000 in 3,058 runs); Sony’s “Eat Pray Love” (roughly $900,000 in 2,339 engagements) and Warner Bros.’ “Inception,” (about $820,000 in 1,583 runs).
