‘Despicable’ is popular at Friday B.O.

New 3D toon from Universal tops $21 million

“Despicable Me,” the 3D toon from Universal that features the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Will Arnett and Miranda Cosgrove, topped the box office on Friday with in an estimate of about $21.7 million in 3,476 runs.

Summit’s “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” performed well its second week out, taking in about $11 million in 4,468 runs, a 61-percent drop off from last week’s opening numbers. Fox’s new pic “Predators” grabbed the No. 3 position with an estimate of $10.5 million in 2,669 engagements. Disney’s “Toy Story 3” came in with about $6.5 million in 3,753 runs. Paramount’s “The Last Airbender” earned about $5.2 million in 3,203 engagements.

Sony’s “Grown Ups” took the No. 6 spot with an estimated $5.1 million in 3,463 runs, while the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz pic “Knight and Day” made about $2.4 million in 2,628 engagements. Sony’s “Karate Kid” followed it for the No. 8 position with about $1.7 million in 2,458 runs, and Fox’s “A-Team” earned about $550,000 in 1,236 engagements.

Fox Searchlight’s “Cyrus” lands in No. 10 spot with an estimated $365,000 in 200 runs.
