Supporting Actress: Helena Bonham Carter

Hollywood Award honoree

“All I do now is play queens and witches,” Helen Bonham Carter admits.

This season she is maternal and wise as Elizabeth, the consort of a future king George VI in “The King’s Speech,” and reprises her role as the truly evil Bellatrix Lestrange in the first of the Harry Potter series’ final two installments.

Bonham Carter knows about queens, having begun her film career as Lady Jane Grey in Trevor Nunn’s biopic of the teenager who reigned for nine days before she lost her head.

“Yes, I now have longevity, there’s some improvement,” Bonham Carter says.

And, of course, there’s her witchy Red Queen in this year’s “Alice in Wonderland,” directed by husband Tim Burton.

Even the couple’s seven-year-old, Billy Ray, thinks she’s a bit typecast. As he recently put it to her, “Momma, who will you be tomorrow, the witch or the queen?”
