‘Social Network’ logs Boston critics’ top awards

Facebook film wins picture, actor, director, screenplay

The Social Network” was the big winner at Sunday’s annual vote of the Boston Society of Film Critics, taking best picture, actor (Jesse Eisenberg), director (David Fincher), screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and best use of music (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross).

Coincidentally, several of the other winners also had strong Boston connections, shooting all or partly in the state. “The Fighter,” about Lowell boxer Micky Ward, won in two categories, with Christian Bale drawing the supporting actor nod and pic taking ensemble cast kudos. “Conviction,” about a Massachusetts woman fighting to get her brother out of prison, picked up a supporting actress nod for Juliette Lewis as a perjuring witness.

Three other films caught the critics’ attention, with “Black Swan” winning best actress for Natalie Portman’s star turn, and Andrew Weisblum tapped for the editing prize, which was renamed in memory of the late Karen Schmeer. The documentary “Marwencol” won both the documentary prize as well as the David Brudnoy First Time Filmmaker Award for director Jeff Malmberg.

At its business meeting, the Boston critics expressed concern about the inconsistent quality of film projection at AMC and Regal Theaters, providing the public with less than optimal viewing conditions. This includes using a 3D lens to project 2D films, resulting in darker images than their makers intend.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Mass., on Jan. 30.
