John Riggi on ‘ 500 Days of Summer’

by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber

I liked the structure of the story, specifically the time jumping. It was the spine of the movie and served the story well. Different elements of the plot became clear at various times. The result was you got this sort of big picture view of this relationship that then slowly came into focus. The screenwriters gave audiences a more believable romantic comedy. Often a story like this is written by deciding what the characters want and then setting up obstacles for them to overcome in order to get it. In real life things aren’t always that predictable and everything can get pretty messy. I thought the writers understood this. The characters always knew what they wanted, but like people in real life, they weren’t exactly sure how to get it. The movie didn’t feel overproduced and packaged. It was just a sweet little movie that had a fresh take on a very familiar genre.

John Riggi, co-executive producer of “30 Rock,” has written several episodes of the series.
