Banksy doc, ‘The Oath’ among IDA nominees

Intl. Documentary Assn. unveils nominations

The Banksy doc “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” Laura Poitras’ “The Oath,” Joonas Berghaell and Mika Hotakainen’s “Steam of Life,” Ilisa Barbash and Lucien Castaing-Taylor’s ‘Sweetgrass,” and Lucy Walker’s “Waste Land” have been tapped as feature nominees by the Intl. Documentary Assn.

IDA announced the nominations Wednesday. Winners will be revealed at Dec. 3 ceremonies at the Directors Guild Theater in Los Angeles, with Morgan Spurlock hosting.

Nominees in the short category are Greg Vanderveer’s “Keep Dancing,” Daniel Junge’s “The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner,” Kiran Doel’s “Woman Rebel,” Rory Kennedy’s “The Fence” and Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert’s “The Last Truck.”

IDA exec director Michael Lumpkin said entries increased by nearly 20% this year and added that the quality of the films is “unprecedented.”

He also said the feature and short documentary categories will be selected by IDA’s members, who will view all of the nominated films through a secure, password-protected online system.

The org also announced on Wednesday that Jeff Malmberg, director of “Marwencol,” will receive the 2010 Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award.

Previously announced awards include Barbara Kopple as Career Achievement honoree; Susan Raymond and Alan Raymond, creators of the PBS series “An American Family,” will receive the Pioneer Award; and Mark J. Harris will receive IDA’s Preservation and Scholarship Award.
