‘An Education’ leads BAFTA longlist

'Basterds,' 'Locker' appear in multiple categories

LONDON — The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its longlist for the 2010 Orange BAFTA awards Thursday, with Lone Scherfig’s “An Education” leading the way with 17 mentions, including best film, director and actress for Carey Mulligan.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” had 15 mentions, Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” nabbed 12, while James Cameron’s “Avatar” and Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones” received 11 each.

Brit director Duncan Jones’ debut pic, “Moon,” received 10 mentions, including film, director and actor, while Sam Taylor-Wood’s John Lennon biopic “Nowhere Boy” received six.

Clint Eastwood received five mentions — two for producer, two for director and one for actor — for “Gran Torino” and “Invictus.”

The BAFTA longlist reflects the first round of voting by Acad members with 15 pics eligible in each category. The shortlist reduces that number to five nominations in each field. Those noms will be announced Jan. 21 and the awards ceremony will be held on Feb. 21.

BAFTA also announced Thursday the nominations for film not in the English language, which are revealed earlier than the other noms to allow members more time to view the films. The nominees are “Broken Embraces,” “Coco Before Chanel,” “Let the Right One In,” “A Prophet” and “The White Ribbon.”
