Scott Mednick gets ‘Haircut’

Producer nabs rights to hit Internet video

Producer Scott Mednick has acquired the feature film rights to hit Internet video “My New Haircut.”

Mednick, who is producing the live-action reboot of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” franchise, bought bigscreen rights from “Haircut” creator Brett Tietjen, who starred in the online video. Mednick also acquired an original script penned by Tietjen and Ryan McMullen.

The original vid, which runs 2 minutes and 46 seconds and first appeared on YouTube in 2007, chronicles the adventures of a character dubbed Broski and his “Guido” lifestyle. The original video has received more than 30 million online views. It has generated more than 130 fan pages and over 250 fan-inspired parodies.

Mednick credits the viral video with fueling the fascination with the New Jersey lifestyle, as chronicled on the MTV reality skein “Jersey Shore.”

“I truly believe that in this day and age, the convergence of viral concepts blended with the ability to tell stories on the bigscreen is a key part of creating new franchises,” said Mednick, who is producing alongside Galen Walker (“TMNT”) and Maria Norman (“Public Enemies”).

YouTube hits are increasingly becoming fodder for film producers. Trend started in 2007, when MTV Films and Todd Phillips began developing “Million Dollar Strong,” based on the satirical musicvid “What’s It Gonna Be?” — a favorite on YouTube and Will Ferrell’s FunnyOrDie.com.

“My New Haircut” is being exec produced by Ankur Jain, Pernille Trojgaard, Gavin Owens and Mark Fierer. Ryan McMullen will serve as an associate producer.

Mednick is also producing the Milla Jovovich-Julian McMahon thriller “Faces in the Crowd,” which begins lensing next month.
