Australia-based Omnilab Media has beefed up its New Zealand FX arm Oktobor with the launch of an Auckland-based animation studio.
Oktobor Animation, launched in conjunction with U.S.-based Backyard Animated Pictures, will bow with a long-term deal with Nickelodeon, with whom it will work on TV toons including “The Penguins of Madagascar.”
“Production has already commenced and our staff number 30,” said Oktobor topper Bruce Everett. “We anticipate Oktobor Animation will provide up to 300 jobs over the first four years.”
Everett added that the Kiwi film subsidies for post, digital and visual effects were integral to the launch of the new studio.
Omnilab topper Christopher Mapp said he hoped the studio could replicate some of the success of Peter Jackson’s FX house Weta Digital in the TV market.
