New Yorker stops to smell ‘Tulip’

Animated feature to get fall release

New Yorker Films has picked up animated feature “My Dog Tulip” for a release that kicks off Sept. 1 in Gotham.

Written, directed and animated by Paul and Sandra Fierlinger, the movie is based on the memoir by J.R. Ackerley about his 14-year relationship with a German shepherd he adopted. Voice talent includes Christopher Plummer, Isabella Rossellini and the late Lynn Redgrave.

Norman Twain, Howard Kaminsky and Frank Pellegrino produced the movie, which has screened at fests including Cannes, Annecy and Toronto.

A national release will come on the heels of the New York run, set to play the Film Forum. New Yorker grabbed theatrical and nontheatrical rights as well as DVD, Blu-ray, digital and TV.

Deal was negotiated by New Yorker’s Jose Lopez with the Film Sales Company’s Andrew Herwitz.

In the spring, indie distributor New Yorker Films re-opened its doors after the company shut down in 2009.
