Justin Long: Former Apple spokesman gets animated

Comedy Impact Report 2010: Animation Sensations

Until recently, actor Justin Long was perhaps most associated with his personification of the Apple brand in those infamous commercials. But in the past year or two, Long has made huge strides beyond that. The thesp has been featured in a rather astounding 16 different films since the beginning of 2009, from “He’s Just Not That Into You” to “Funny People” to “Going the Distance.”

“It sounds like a lot more work than it actually was,” Long says with a laugh, noting how small some of the roles had been. “But I love the idea of stretching myself and doing as large a variety of characters as I can. The actors I’ve always admired are the ones you could never really peg.”

Long has also expanded considerably into voicework. Since playing Alvin in the hugely successful “Alvin and the Chipmunks” film, Long has worked on “Chipmunk” follow-ups (the “Squeakquel” grossed $443 million worldwide, with another due next year), “Alpha and Omega,” “Planet 51” and recent box office champ “Megamind.”

“I love doing voicework,” Long says. “There’s a complete lack of vanity to worry about, which is nice. You could just show up naked if you wanted to. I haven’t yet, but it’s comforting to know that I could.”
