German fest fare gets webbed feat

Oldenburg to stream Teuton indies over Mubi service

When the Oldenburg Intl. Film Festival kicks off Sept. 15, it will become the first German fest to showcase a selection of its films online via the Mubi video-on-demand platform, giving local indies a chance to reach worldwide auds.

The free service will stream titles nominated for the fest’s German Independence Award, presented to the best Teutonic film at Oldenburg; this effort is aimed specifically at foreign viewers, and the pics will be inaccessible to auds in Germany. But the service also will make available all the fest’s short film lineup.

A growing number of international fests have already partnered with Mubi (formerly known as the Auteurs), and for Oldenburg organizers the cooperation is seen as an ideal promotional platform for German cinema.

Mubi boasts more than 300,000 registered users and has a catalog of some 1,100 films, including works by the Coen brothers, Takeshi Kitano, Pedro Almodovar, Quentin Tarantino and Gus Van Sant.

Oldenburg showcases some 70 films, more than a third of which are domestic productions, and regularly attracts around 16,000 fest-goers.
