Visual effects pics unveiled for Oscar bakeoff

'Avatar,' 'District 9' among seven competing films

The Motion Picture Academy today announced the seven films that will compete in the Oscar visual effects bakeoff.

The seven finalists for a nomination are: “Avatar,” “District 9,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” “Star Trek,” “Terminator Salvation,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “2012.”

Notable omissions from the list: “Watchmen,” “G-Force” and “G.I. Joe.”

The visual effects bakeoff will be held Thursday evening, Jan 21 at the Academy’s Goldwyn Theater. Each pic will present 15 minutes of highlights. Members of the branch attend and vote for the three nominees immediately afterward.

The final three nominees will be announced Feb. 2 along with the rest of the Oscar nominations.
