Wyclef Jean’s Presidential Bid Rejected

Wyclef Jean’s plans to run for president of Haiti were blocked by the country’s board of elections, which said that he failed to meet residency requirements.

The singer conceded on Friday that “we must respect the rule of law in order for our island to become the
great nation we all aspire for it to be.”

He wrote on the Huffington Post, “Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee’s
final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same. We must all
honor the memories of those we’ve lost–whether in the earthquake, or at
anytime–by responding peacefully and responsibly to this
disappointment.”

There had been concern all along that he would not meet the residency requirement — which is that he have lived in the country for the past five years.
