Obama Tapes “It Gets Better” Message

The White House posted President Obama’s version of “It Gets Better,” the video series launched by Dan Savage in which celebrities, politicos and others share their experiences of what it has been like as openly gay adults. It’s obviously drawn many heterosexuals as well, particularly with the prevalence of gay teen and young adult suicides just in the past month, the most recent on Tuesday.

It will be interesting what the reaction is to Obama’s entry, given the sense of frustration of many in the gay community over the administration’s decision to continue to defend Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell in the court, even after a federal court judge ruled it unconstitutional. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has granted a temporary stay on that ruling until at least Monday. The administration says that it would live to repeal the law in Congress, although there are serious doubts that such an action will be successful in the lame duck session of Congress.
