Lou Dobbs today is battling a story in The Nation — titled “Lou Dobbs, American Hypocrite” — that says that he hired illegal immigrants for years, despite a recent career of battling against the undocumented.
He says that he had been told that they were “absolutely legal.”
“And you were told the same thing, and you didn’t mention that in your piece,” he said on his radio program Thursday which featured the author of the article, Isabel Macdonald.
The whole episode obviously brings to mind comparisons to Meg Whitman, who last week denied knowing that she had hired an illegal immigrant as her maid.
The hypocrisy charge has more sting in this case, even if the stakes are lower because Dobbs is not running for elective office (yet). In fairness to Whitman, she didn’t stake her campaign on targeting illegal immigrants, even during the primary, a period she’d probably rather not have happened as she now seeks to cut in to Jerry Brown’s share of the Latino vote.
Dobbs and Macdonald are due on Lawrence O’Donnell’s “The Last Word” this evening.
