Ben Affleck is starting an advocacy and aid organization devoted to the crisis in Eastern Congo, where millions have died in the war-torn region of the country and many others are terrorized by the prospect of child slavery and sexual violence.

The org is called the Eastern Congo Initiative, with its mission being to provide aid to “local community-based approaches that create a sustainable and successful society in the long troubled region.”

Other members of the org include Howard G. Buffett, the son of Warren Buffett; Humanity United; the Bridgeway Foundation and Jewish World Watch.

Affleck just returned from his fifth visit to the country.

He told the AP, “It was folks in these communities that were addressing the humanitarian crisis who were doing the most, in my view, to solve it, because they understood the community, because they understood the problem, they were the most dedicated and the most committed because it was their lives.”

“Naturally they were best equipped to solve it. Their impediment was they didn’t have the means, the funding,” he said.
