Turkey drawn to ‘Honey’ for Oscars

Kaplanoglu's Golden Bear winner to rep country

ALMATY, Kazakhstan — Semih Kaplanoglu’s Berlinale Golden Bear winning film “Honey” is Turkey’s entry for the Oscars, the Ankara Cinema Assn. confirmed Tuesday.

The last film in a trilogy by the director that have monosyllabic titles — “Egg” and “Milk” are the last two — “Honey” tells the story of a six-year-old boy who wanders in a remote forest looking for his beekeeper father, who it turns out has died in a bizarre accident.

Acclaimed for its simplicity and depth, the world seen through the eyes of a child poses some uncomfortable questions for audiences, such as why the bees in the forest are dying; and what is humankind doing to itself and the planet that is destroying nature’s sweetness.
