MADRID — Spanish satcaster Digital Plus has sold distribution rights to its premium pay TV channel Canal Plus to IPTV platform Orange TV.
The move reps the first time that a rival Spanish pay TV outfit has been able to offer Canal Plus nationwide over its own in-house distribution system.
The parent companies, Prisa and France Telecom’s Orange respectively, have also inked a triple-play package that combines Digital Plus’ bouquet of 36 satellite channels, led by Canal Plus and soccer channel Canal Plus Liga, and Orange’s broadband and voice telephony services.
Both deals follow Digital Plus’ strategy of distributing its content beyond the satellite system.
To date, Sogecable had joined forces with dominant Spanish telco Telefonica and IPTV operator Jazztel to offer triple-play packages. In June, Prisa also sold Canal Plus to Spanish regional cable operator Telecable.
Moves come after Digital Plus saw subs fall 189,000 in 2009 to 1.85 million after the launch of rival Mediapro pay DTT soccer service Gol TV.
