Rezo wraps up Dolan’s ‘Love’

French company nabs rights to pic

Gallic mini-major Rezo has taken France and all international rights outside Canada on “Love, Imagined,” the second film from Canada’s Xavier Dolan.

Dolan’s debut, “I Killed My Mother,” swept three prizes at Cannes’ 2009 Directors’ Fortnight. That kudos trawl was remarkable, all the more so since Dolan made “Mother” at the age of 20.

French-language “Imagined,” which was written and directed by Dolan, will be ready for delivery by this year’s Cannes.

“Imagined” follows the infatuation of two friends with the same mysterious young man. Inevitably, their friendship suffers.

Key cast is Dolan, Monia Chokri (“The Age of Ignorance”) and Niels Schneider, who played Dolan’s boarding-school friend in “Mother.”

Producers are Dolan, Daniel Morin at Montreal’s Boreal Films and Carole Mondello at Mililifilms, the same producer team behind “Mother.”

“We’re very glad to be on board Xavier’s new film. I truly believe in his talent as a scriptwriter and director,” said Sebastien Chesneau, Rezo head of international sales. “He’s been considered as a filmmaker to watch, right after his first film, by both distributors and critics. He finds the right recipe to build genuine crowdpleasers.”

“Mother” sold to more than 20 territories, including a U.S. deal with Here! Films. It will be released theatrically in the U.S. this spring.

Rezo is showcasing a promo reel of “Love, Imagined” in the market in Berlin and organizing a market screening of “Mother.”
