Poe takes ‘Commedia’ to Venice

Pic to world premiere at fest on Sept. 3

Making a last-minute addition, the Venice festival announced Tuesday that cult U.S. helmer Amos Poe’s latest film will unspool.

“La Commedia,” produced and directed by Poe, tells the metaphorical tale of two middle-aged travelers confronting a mid-life crisis and progressing from hell to heaven in the process.

The picture is inspired by Dante Alighieri’s medieval literary masterpiece “The Divine Comedy” and photographer Eadweard Muybridge’s 19th century breakthrough “The Horse in Motion” — sometimes referred to as the first motion picture.

“I was looking for a film to make and was looking for a good writer. Dante came to mind,” Poe said. “My hope is that the viewer will be equally entertained by what is going on the screen as by what’s happening in her or his head and heart.”

The film will have its world premiere at the 67th Venice fest at midnight on Sept. 3 in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema), out of competish.

Poe wrote, produced and directed 1977’s “The Foreigner,” with Eric Mitchell and Debbie Harry.

He also founded the No Wave Cinema movement along with Jim Jarmusch, Mitchell, James Nares, John Lurie and Richard Kern.
