Mexico's 'Asalto' takes Cinecinema Award

MADRID — Colombian helmer Carlos Cesar Arbelaez’s long-in-the-works “Los colores de la montana” has won the Films in Progress Toulouse award.

“Asalto al Cine,” from Mexico’s Iria Gomez Concheiro, picked up the CineCinema Award. Its Euros15,000 ($20,100) cash prize reps the acquisition of pay TV rights by CanalSat movie channel bouquet Cine Cinema.

Ten years in the making, from conception to completion, “Montana” is produced by Juan Pablo Tamayo’s El Bus Producciones, Panama’s Jaguar Films and RCN Cine, the film division of Colombian broadcaster RCN.

The feature film deb of Arbelaez, an established TV series and docu filmmaker, family drama “Montana” charts the slowly devastating impact of Colombia’s armed conflict on the life of a family in a quiet mountain hamlet. Pic climaxes with the family’s desperate flight to Medellin.

“Montana” pulls down a bevy of Films in Progress cash and kind awards, including $13,400 from France’s Centre National du Cinema, sound editing to a value of $20,100 from Paris’ Mac’tari and subtitling from Titra Film.

A cinema theater heist movie, “Asalto” is also Mexican Gomez Concheiro’s first feature.

The 18th Films in Progress unspools at September’s San Sebastian fest.
