Andy Garcia, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Peter O’Toole, Eva Longoria Parker and Bruce Greenwood have been cast in Mexican historical epic “Cristiada” for NewLand Films, which is producing and financing.

Production began Monday with visual FX veteran Dean Wright directing and Pablo Jose Barroso producing. Oscar Isaac, Santiago Cabrera, Ruben Blades and Nestor Carbonell are also starring.

Pic’s touted as the largest Mexican-produced film and will shoot for 12 weeks in various locations around the country including Mexico City, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi and Puebla.

Wright and Michael James Love penned the screenplay for “Cristiada,” centered on the 1926-29 Cristeros war, touched off by a rebellion over the Mexican government’s 1917 attempt to remove the influence of the Catholic Church and secularize the country.

Wright supervised vfx on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” and its sequel “Prince Caspian,” the last two “Lord of the Rings” pics, “Titanic” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.”
