Magnet Releasing has scored U.S. rights to Takashi Miike’s samurai story “13 Assassins.”
Based on the 1963 film of the same name, “Assassins,” set in Japan in 1844, centers on a samurai (played by Koji Yakusho) who brings together a baker’s dozen of killers to assassinate the shogun’s brother. Film had its world preem in Venice earlier this year and has since played Toronto and Fantastic Fest.
Pact was negotiated by Tom Quinn of Magnet, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, and HanWay Films’ Tim Haslam. Magnet will release film in the U.S. in early 2011.
“Assassins” joins an list of upcoming Magnet offerings that also includes “Chawz,” “I Saw the Devil” and “Ong Bak 3.”
