Kusturica opens Kustendorf fest

Johnny Depp on hand for indie films

PRAGUE — Kustendorf, the irreverent film fest founded by helmer Emir Kusturica, launches today high atop a Serbian mountain, with Johnny Depp opening a week of indie films aimed at inspiring film students.

Kusturica, who helped start Depp’s career with “Arizona Dream” in 1993, launched the fest in 2008 as an antidote to what he sees as the domination of corporate interests in filmmaking.

Pics unspooling include Asghar Farhadi’s “About Elly,” Iran; Pavel Lungin’s “Tsar,” Russia; Christian Carion’s “Farewell,” France; Raja Amari’s “Buried Secrets,” Tunisia/Switzerland/France; Jim Jarmusch’s “The Limits of Control”; Elia Suleiman’s “The Time That Remains,” U.K./Italy/Belgium/France; and Fatih Akin’s “Soul Kitchen,” Germany.

The main program consists of students’ and young helmers’ films received through an open call, competing for kudos decided by jurors Sara Driver, an indie filmmaker who has worked extensively with Jarmusch; producer Jonathan Weisgal; and jury prexy Marjane Satrapi, director of 2007 toon memoir “Persepolis.”
