Karl Urban seals ‘Judge Dredd’ role

Peter Travis to direct remake of sci-fier for DNA Films

Karl Urban (“Star Trek”) has closed his deal to star in a remake of sci-fier “Judge Dredd” for DNA Films.

Pete Travis is set to direct “Dredd,” which will begin shooting in October. The project’s not yet set up at a studio.

Urban had disclosed during Comic-Con last month to the Collider.com web site that he had been offered the lead in “Dredd.”

The original 1995 film starred Sylvester Stallone, Armand Assante, Diane Lane and Rob Schneider and was produced by Cinergi and distributed by Disney. Domestic gross was $33 million with a worldwide total of $113 million.

Urban will next be seen in “Red” opposite Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren for Summit and in “Priest” with Paul Bettany and Cam Gigandet for Screen Gems.

Urban is repped by WME.

At last, [...]

Toronto Film Review: 'There’s Something in the Water'

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the unpleasant sights, smells and pollutants of industry have typically been located where the poor folk dwell, and police society needn’t notice. With the dawn of popular environmental consciousness about a half-century ago, it became clear that toxic byproducts with a dismayingly long shelf life and unknown (or, [...]

Toronto Film Review: 'David Foster: Off the Record'

By the early 1970s, as the counterculture was dissolving and reconfiguring, there were new pop-star archetypes on the horizon that we still tend to think of — the glam rocker, the sensitive singer-songwriter, the hair-band metal strutter, the prog-rock wizard, the belting pop chanteuse, the punk rocker. But there was another figure of the era [...]
