LONDON — FremantleMedia has scored a coup by persuading the Chinese to produce a local version of gameshow “Hole in the Wall,” a format that originally emerged in Japan.
The Chinese version will bow on the flagship channel of China Central Television, CCTV1, on Sept. 19.
It is unusual for non-indigenous shows to air on Chinese TV, but recently there have been several breakthroughs.
Mexico’s Televisa is working with CCTV on a localized version of the telenovela “Distilling Love,” while Ricky Gervais said last month that a Chinese version of “The Office” is being produced.
“Hole in the Wall,” originally known as “Human Tetris,” bowed on Japan’s Fuji TV in 2006, subsequently becoming a big seller for FremantleMedia.
More than 40 countries have broadcast the show including the Cartoon Network in the U.S., the BBC in the U.K. and Oz’s Nine Network.
