Project adapts former Czech president's play, 'Leaving'

Former Czech President and scribe Vaclav Havel is prepping to direct his first feature.

Project is based on his stage play “Leaving,” a political satire that will begin shooting in June.

Feature stars Havel’s wife, Dagmar Havlova, with local thesps Josef Abrham, Jaroslav Dusek and Eva Holubova. It will be produced by Jaroslav Bocek and is skedded to hit cinemas next March.

Producers won’t release the budget but it’s likely to be in the usual $1.5 million range for homegrown pics.

In the play, a fussy national leader wrestles with the desire to step down but is troubled by the question of giving up the trappings of power.

Currently a hit in Prague and performed in London and New York, “Leaving” was Havel’s first play after 20 years as a politician.

Havel was once jailed by communists because of his controversial theatrical works.

He later became the first democratically elected president after the 1989 Velvet Revolution.
