Fatih Akin’s Hamburg-based Corazon Intl. is teaming with Paris’ Les Petites Lumieres to produce “UFO in Her Eyes,” the next film from China’s Xiaolu Guo.
Corazon will put up 80% of “UFO” financing. The contempo drama is skedded to roll this year in China, where Guo has been location scouting, according to Corazon co-head Klaus Maeck, who will also produce.
Expanding Guo’s novel of the same title, “UFO” turns on how the experience of seeing an unidentified flying object changes the life of a Chinese villager.
Film is told from several p.o.v.’s, including that of a government agent investigating the event, Maeck said.
“UFO” received seed coin from the Rotterdam Festival Hubert Bals Fund and also pulled E 150,000 ($203,100) from the Franco-German Co-Production Fund and a matching amount from Hamburg regional film fund Filmfoerderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein.
“UFO” has been pre-bought by German regional pubcaster NDR and German-French cultural web Arte. Also a novelist, London-located Guo won the 2009 Locarno Festival Golden Leopard for “She, a Chinese.”
