BIARRITZ, France — Gallic powerhouse Canal Plus is set to co-produce “XIII: The Series,” a comic-book based skein starring Stuart Townsend (“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”), Virginie Ledoyen (“All That Glitters”) and Caterina Murino (“Casino Royale”).
Set up at French outfit Cipango — now owned by Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp — and Canadian company Prodigy Pictures, the 13-episode English-language series is a spin-off of the two-parter starring Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff, which pulled record ratings for Canal Plus and sold to 150 territories.
Series has a budget of $32 million.
The creative duo behind the original show, scribe Gil Grant (“24”) and helmer Duane Clark (“CSI”) are back on board for the second season. Grant wrote the pilot and will showrun the series. Clark will direct a few episodes, including the pilot, and will co-produce.
Canal Plus, a leading supporter of Gallic genre fare, has tapped up-and-coming filmmakers Philippe Haim (“Secrets of State”), Xavier Palud (“The Eye”) and Gerard Pires (“Taxi”) to direct other episodes.
Lensing will kick off Sept. 13 in Canada. The show will air in Gaul on Canal Plus and in Canada on Showcase next year.
