Imagina closes with Alcine Terran

Warner Bros. has scooped up David Liss’ period novel “A Conspiracy of Paper” for Ridley and Tony Scott to produce through their Scott Free banner.

Danny Strong (“Recount”) has been tapped to adapt the mystery thriller, set in early 18th century London against the backdrop of the beginnings of stock speculation and the retreat from a mineral-based currency. Protag is Benjamin Weaver, a Jewish former boxer living on the fringes of criminal society who becomes entangled with powerful financial giants.

Book sparked a bidding war in 2000 after it was first published. Miramax paid $1 million for the film rights at the time.

Scott Free’s Michael Costigan brought the project to WB, which sparked to the idea of another London-set period pic after the success of “Sherlock Holmes.” Sarah Schechter is overseeing for the studio.

Strong has become an in-demand scribe after penning HBO’s Jay Roach-helmed “Recount.” His first draft of “The Butler” at Columbia Pictures got Lee Daniels attached to direct. He is rewriting “EDF” for Warners with Pierre Morel directing and Sam Raimi producing. Strong, who moonlights in the splashy recurring role of Danny Siegel on “Mad Men,” is set to reteam with Roach and HBO on “Game Change.”He is repped by CAA, the Gotham Group and attorney Alan Wertheimer.
