‘Bastards’ handed Rose d’Or

British, German shows win two prizes each

LONDON — Belgian laffer “Benidorm Bastards” was named the best show of 2010 at the golden jubilee event of the Rose d’Or, Europe’s biggest TV competish, on Wednesday evening.

The show was praised for the “ageless quality of its humor.”

The U.K.’s once firm grip on the contest was loosened, with only two of 12 roses going to British shows. The Brits scored with cult Channel 4 sitcom “The Inbetweeners,” which scooped the sitcom prize, and BBC3 docu “Blood, Sweat and Takeaways,” winner in the reality and factual entertainment category.

German programs also picked up two prizes — in the children and youth section, won by “Krimi.de” (Web Attack), broadcast by pubcaster Sudwestrundfunk, and the social award, won by “Karawane der Hoffnung “(Desert Tears), which is distributed by ProSieben Seven One Intl.

Entries from Argentina, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, South Africa, Spain and Switzerland each won a rose apiece.

The awards, which included Golden Jubilee prizes for Simon Cowell and veteran U.K. soap “Coronation Street” by virtue of their outstanding contribution to entertainment television, were presented at a gala ceremony in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Cowell was conspicuous by his absence at the proceedings.

More than 500 shows from 40 countries entered the contest.
