Venice adds Skolimowski’s ‘Killing’

Vincent Gallo toplines as Taliban insurgent

The Venice Film Festival has added Polish helmer Jerzy Skolimowski’s provocative thriller “Essential Killing,” starring Vincent Gallo as a Taliban insurgent, to its competition roster.

“Essential” is the tale of an Afghan man captured by American forces in Kabul, who manages to escape after he is transported to a nameless European country.

Pic, which also stars Emmanuelle Seigner and is almost entirely without dialogue, is produced by Poland’s Skopia Film and is being sold internationally by HanWay Films.

In a statement, Venice praised Skolimowski’s latest work, which will be finished just in time for the fest, as confirming “the excellent form of the enfant terrible of New Eastern European Film.”

Skolimowski is a Venice aficionado who has had several films screened on the Lido, starting with “Deep End” in 1970. He served on the main jury in 2001.

Gallo will also be in Venice as helmer of suicide drama “Promises Written in Water,” unspooling in competish.

A fest spokesman said Venice will announce its customary “surprise” competition entry on Sept. 6.

The fest’s 67th edition will run Sept. 1-11.
