WSA winners announced at close of Ghent fest

Composers Carter Burwell, Alexandre Desplat, James Horner and Hans Zimmer lead the nominations for the 10th annual World Soundtrack Awards, which will be handed out Oct. 23 on the closing night of the Ghent International Film Festival in Belgium.

The top category, Film Composer of the Year, recognizes the aggregate work of the nominees over the past 12 months. Burwell is being considered for his scores for “The Blind Side,” “A Serious Man,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” “The Kids Are All Right” and the upcoming “Howl.” Zimmer’s nom is based on his music for “Sherlock Holmes,” “Despicable Me” and “It’s Complicated.” Desplat — last year’s two-time WSA winner for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” — is cited for “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “New Moon,” “Julie & Julia” and “The Ghost Writer.”

Other nominees include Danny Elfman (“Alice in Wonderland,” “The Wolfman”) and John Powell (“Green Zone,” “How To Train Your Dragon,” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” “Knight & Day”).

Desplat, Horner and Zimmer were nominated for scoring Oscars in January, with Michael Giacchino ultimately claiming the statuette for “Up,” for which he was nominated at last year’s WSA.

Original Score nominees include Burwell and Karen Orzolek (better known as Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) for “Wild Things,” Desplat (“Fantastic Mr. Fox”), James Horner (“Avatar”), Abel Korzeniowski (“A Single Man”) and Zimmer (“Holmes”).

Desplat, Horner and Zimmer were nominated for scoring Oscars earlier this year, for which he was nominated at last year’s WSA.

For Original Song Written Directly for a Film, Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett bring their Oscar-winning “The Weary Kind” from “Crazy Heart,” along with Randy Newman’s Oscar-nominated “Almost There” from “The Princess and the Frog”; Horner and company’s “I See You” from “Avatar”; Paul McCartney’s “I Want to Come Home” from “Everybody’s Fine”; and Jon Birgisson’s “Sticks & Stones” from “How to Train Your Dragon.”

Nominees are determined by the approximately 300 international composers, label execs and other film music pros in the World Soundtrack Academy.
