Sony has booked its reservation for GK Films’ thriller “The Tourist.”
Studio will open the Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie starrer on Dec. 10, where it will duke it out with Paramount’s period boxing pic “The Fighter,” another high-profile drama that will likely target a similar audience.
Sony is distributing “The Tourist” as part of its new distrib deal with Graham King’s GK Films, which financed the pic.
“The Tourist” and “The Fighter” also face off against “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”
The dating of “The Tourist” officially confirmed that another GK Films/Depp vehicle, “The Rum Diary,” won’t open until 2011. Insiders say the star doesn’t want to compete against himself at the box office in the fall.
The December frame — typically the busiest of the year with family fare and awards season hopefuls — will feature a number of pics jockeying for adult auds including Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” which gets a limited berth Dec. 1, and the James L. Brooks dramedy “How Do You Know,” which Sony releases wide Dec. 17.
