‘Rose’ blooms at Pilsner fest

Hrabek's communist-era story wins main and audience prizes

Grand prize, the Golden Kingfisher, along with aud fave kudo at the Pilsner Film Festival, went to Jan Hrebejk for his story of a man haunted by communist-era weaknesses, “Kawasaki’s Rose.” Pic beat out eight others, including two that were roundly praised and also considered the shadow of past regimes, Radim Spacek’s “Walking Too Fast,” which earned special mention and thesp prize for Ondrej Maly, and Marek Najbrt’s “Protektor.”

Some 19 other features screened out of competish in the West Bohemian brewery town of Pilsen, and another 19 docus were up for kudos, indicating what the Czech Film Center’s Jana Cernikova calls a revival in regional film.

Land of Destiny,” a creative tribute to film scholar Ivan Vyskocil by Pavel Kolaja, won the docu main prize, while “Phantom of Liberty II,” a Czech-German free-form Bunuel riff, drew special mention.
