Newmarket Entertainment has inked a deal with Til Schweiger and Tom Zickler’s Berlin-based Barefoot Films for remake rights to the 2007 romantic comedy hit “Keinohrhasen” (Rabbit Without Ears).
Helmed by and starring Schweiger, pic grossed nearly $58 million in Germany and spawned a sequel that has already become one of the biggest hits of the year with a $40 million cume (and still going strong).
Rabbit” centers on a skirt-chasing tabloid journo who meets his match in a children’s daycare manager.
Pic is just the latest Teutonic effort to be remade by Hollywood.
Inferno Entertainment and Magnet Media Group are producing a redo of Oliver Hirschbiegel’s psychological thriller “The Experiment” that stars Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker and Cam Gigandet.
Other recent Teutonic titles to get the Hollywood treatment include “Blood Wedding,” the 2005 German comedy written and directed by Dominique Deruddere, and Sandra Nettelbeck’s “Mostly Martha,” the basis for Castle Rock Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures’ 2007 “No Reservations,” starring Catherine Zeta-Jones.
