‘Kisses’ to open Controcampo Italiano

Venice section looks at trends in Italian cinema

Italo helmer Roberta Torre’s “I baci mai dati” (Lost Kisses) will open the 67th Venice Film Festival’s Controcampo Italiano section dedicated to new trends in local cinema.

“Kisses” is a Sicily-set tale about a 13-year-old girl who pretends she can perform miracles, a hoax that people begin to believe.

Co-financed by the Sicily region with Adriana Chiesa Enterprises, which is selling the pic internationally, “Kisses” is Torre’s return to the Lido where her first feature, Mafia musical, “Tano da morire” made a splash in 1997.

Italo thesp Valerio Mastandrea (“Nine”) will head the jury of the competitive Controcampo Italiano, which Venice topper Marco Mueller introduced last year.

The section’s two other jurors will be helmer Susanna Nicchiarelli, whose “Cosmonauta” took the first Controcampo prize, and Italo film critic Dario Edoardo Vigano.

The Controcampo winner will receive a €40,000 ($51,000) voucher from Kodak to spend on 35mm or 16mm film stock. Fest runs Sept. 1-11.
