Icon U.K. Group has inked an exclusive long-term output deal, giving Canuck distrib D Films the right to release all Icon content in Canada.
Toronto-based D Films, set up in May 2009, will initially release five to six Icon pics a year and then expand to six to eight. Icon will also have the option of handling sales for any future D Films productions.
D Films will take rights for TV and DVD for a number of unsold pics from Icon’s film and TV library.
It is Icon’s first output deal since CEO Stewart Till, former United Intl. Pictures topper, acquired the group in November. Till has made no secret of his plans to extend Icon’s international reach.
The deal was brokered by D Films chairman Darryl Iwai and Till, who also will join the board of directors at the distrib.
The move reunites Iwai and Till for the third time. Iwai worked at Till’s Signpost Films and before that at PolyGram Filmed Entertainment.
“D Films is a startup and Icon is in a new incarnation since I acquired it in 2009,” Till said. “So we’re both new, and it’s a great partnership.”
