Goldwyn steps up for ‘Dancer’

Chinese tale slated for August release

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to Bruce Beresford’s “Mao’s Last Dancer” and will open the biopic on Aug. 6.

Film is based on the autobiography of dancer Li Cunxin and follows his journey from poverty in China to international stardom. He was one of the first students of the Beijing Dance Academy to go to America, and he married Australian dancer Mary McKendry in 1987; they now live in Australia.

Directed by Beresford, “Mao’s Last Dancer” was produced by Jane Scott from a screenplay by Jan Sardi.

Bruce Greenwood, Kyle Mac-Lachlan, Joan Chen, Chi Cao and Amanda Schull star. Pic was the top grosser last year among local pics in Australia with $13.7 million.

Goldwyn’s recent releases include “Priceless,” a comedy starring Audrey Tautou; Claude Lelouch’s “Roman De Gare”; “Elegy, starring Penelope Cruz and Ben Kingsley; and “Fireproof.”
