FilmSharks swims into U.S.

Company sells pics for Stateside release

FilmSharks Intl., a leading sales company in Latin America, is extending sales in the U.S. with deals for Argentina’s “A Boyfriend for My Wife” and Finland’s “Letters to Father Jacob.”

Saint Charles, Ill.-based Olive Films picked up U.S. and North American rights for both titles for theatrical releases later this year from Guido Rud’s Buenos Aires shingle.

“Jacob,” the tale of a convict and a blind priest directed by Kalus Haro, will bow in August in Los Angeles and New York, followed by other markets.

Olive is due to release “Boyfriend,” the hot 2008 comedy out of Argentina, in September.

Directed by Juan Taratuto, “Boyfriend” is about a husband who tries to get his wife to fall in love with another man so he can leave her. Warner Bros. Pictures last year optioned the U.S. remake rights for “Boyfriend” in a deal FilmSharks helped to negotiate.

In another deal, FilmSharks picked up all international sales rights for “Sister Welsh’s Nights,” a French fantasy film directed by Jean-Claude Janer that will make its world preem at the Berlinale’s Generation 14plus sidebar.

“Sister” is about a wildly imaginative and unattractive 14-year-old girl.

FilmSharks also took sales rights for “Amar a Morir” (Love Till Death), the highest-grossing Spanish-lingo film in Mexico last year. The action-drama about a boy bailing out of the marriage his wealthy father wants for him is directed by Fernando Lebrija and stars Jose Maria de Tavira of “Tear This Heart Out.” Mexico’s Gussi already has taken rights for the rest of Latin America.
