Douro to honor Saura

Lineup includes Stone, Roach, Polanski

MADRID — Vet Spanish director Carlos Saura (“The Hunt,” “Raise Ravens” “Flamenco”) will be honored at this Portugal’s budding Douro Film Harvest, where he will receive a Casta D’Ouro Special Guest award.

Saura’s “I, Don Giovanni” will screen in Douro’s main competition section, Vintage Selection.

Now in its second year, DFH reps a growing trend in alternative film festivals that broaden the event’s traditional format, combining cinema with music, food and wine and unspooling against the majestic backdrop of Portugal’s Douro wine valley, a Unesco World Heritage site.

Announced Wednesday, DFH’s lineup reflects this broader brief, combining feel-good, more mainstream titles, music and gastronomic-themed items, and harder-hitting issue-driven pics.

Potential highlights in the 10-title Vintage Selection include the Walter Salles-produced and StudioCanal sold “Quincas Wateryell,” a wake dramedy helmed by Sergio Machado, Michael Douglas starrer “Solitary Man,” to distinctive dramas such as Alexei Popogrebsky’s Arctic wastes-set “How I Ended This Summer,” Brazilian multi-part “5 x Favela, Now by Ourselves” and Joao Ribeiro’s Portugal-Mozambique co-production “Last Flight of the Flamingo,” which world preems at Douro.

Oliver Stone competes in Vintage Selection with “South of the Border.” DFH will also screen Sarah Bertrand’s “Rolling With Stone,” a portrait of Stone’s shooting “Border.”

Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer” is another Vintage Selection contender; Jay Roach’s “Dinner for Schmucks” plays a Wine and Food Films sidebar.

DFH runs Sept. 5-11.
