MONTREAL — The battle to dominate Canuck new-media platforms continues, with the news that Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings will be in Toronto on Wednesday to announce the details of the launch of Netflix in Canada. Netflix had announced in July that it was going to enter the Canadian marketplace this fall, the online movie and TV-show downloading company’s first launch outside of the U.S. (Daily Variety, July 20).

The fight to take a leading position in the Canadian downloading biz heated up in recent days with the announcement that top Canadian telecom company BCE was spending over $3 billion to acquire Canada’s top-rated TV network CTV. Earlier this year, Shaw took over financially troubled CanWest to own content it can funnel through its upcoming cell-phone service.

Quebecor and Rogers are also intensifying their efforts to provide movies and TV shows online.
