Bin Laden spoof gets U.S. bow

Pakistan ban over terrorist fears delayed Ali Zafar starrer's release

Having tested the waters elsewhere, Indian comedy “Tere bin Laden,” a spoof on Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, will unspool in limited release in the U.S. today.

Toplined by Pakistani singer-artist Ali Zafar, the mid-budget pic has grossed $5.3 million so far in India, the U.K., the UAE, Australia, Kenya, South Africa, Mauritius and Malaysia.

But its U.S. release was delayed after Pakistan banned the pic amid fears it would incite terrorist attacks.

Story centers on a Pakistani TV reporter who, eager for a scoop, gets a chicken farmer to double as the notorious terrorist.

Distrib Cinergy Independent will bow pic on 13 prints in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago before expanding Aug. 15, which is India’s Independence Day.

“It’s a bizarre madcap comedy, we can see markets lapping it up,” said tyro helmer Abhishek Sharma.
