HAF honors 5 Asian films

12 co-productions the highest in event's history

HONG KONG — Five Asian filmmakers had their works-in-progress honored at the eighth Hong Kong Asian Film Financing Forum (HAF) Wednesday, the closing day of Hong Kong’s Filmart confab.

The winners were chosen from 25 projects from 17 territories, and included 12 co-productions — the highest in HAF’s history, indicating a growing trend of Asian film collaboration.

There was a poignant moment when Kit Hung received the first Wouter Barendrecht award, dedicated to the Hong Kong-based Dutch producer who died last year. Barendrecht set up HAF and promoted Asian cinema throughout his career.

Hung won HK$50,000 ($6,500) for “Mama Eva,” a Hong Kong/China/Switzerland co-production.

Kwok Tsz-kin’s “The Enchanter” won for a project originating in Hong Kong while Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s “Twins” won the award for a project originating outside Hong Kong.

The Technicolor Asia award was presented to French co-production “Cosplay” by China’s Sheng Zhimin, and the Paris Project Award went to “I Love You So Much” by Taiwan’s Leon Dai.

There was a big rise in interest in HAF this year. The organizers set up 500 appointments between investors, producers and distributors, up 10% on last year.
